Math Wordle: the Number Version of Wordle, Explained

A math Wordle brings Wordle-style deduction to numbers. Nerdle is one example: find a hidden eight-character equation in six guesses, using the colored clues after each try.

What Is a Math Wordle?#

“Math Wordle” is a description, rather than the name of one game. Some puzzles hide an equation; others ask you to find a number or a calculation with a known result. Their rules differ, but each guess gives you information for the next.

Nerdle launched in January 2022 with an eight-character equation and six guesses. NerdleBuddy is an independent companion: we provide a solver, guides, verified replays, and our own original puzzles. For the game's history and creators, read what Nerdle is and how it began.

For a direct, side-by-side rundown against the original word game, see Nerdle vs Wordle.

How It Plays in 30 Seconds#

A hidden equation sits behind the board — something like 21+34=55 — and you get six guesses to name it. Every guess has to be a complete, true equation built from the digits 0-9 and the symbols + - * / =. Wordle requires an accepted word; Nerdle requires a valid calculation.

Submit a guess and the tiles answer in three colors:

5

Green — right character, right spot.

7

Purple — right character, wrong spot.

9

Black — this copy of the character is not needed. Another copy may still be green or purple.

Say the hidden equation is 21+34=55 and you open with 12+35=47:

12+35=47

Three tiles turn green immediately — the plus sign, the first digit of 34, and the equals sign all land exactly right. Four more turn purple: a 1, 2, 5, and 4 are somewhere in the real equation, just not there yet. Only the 7 goes black because it does not appear in 21+34=55. You now know which characters to keep and which positions to change.

Every guess also has to be genuinely correct arithmetic, order of operations included — that’s the whole twist. NerdleBuddy models 17,723 written equation forms in the answer space (how we compute that). For repeated digits, valid guesses, and order of operations, read how to play Nerdle.

Where to Play#

Try today’s Nerdle puzzle on NerdleBuddy's replay board. It uses the verified published Classic equation. If you get stuck, enter your guesses and feedback in the Nerdle solver to see which modeled answers remain and which guesses could help.

Nerdle also ships its own size variants — Mini, Micro, Maxi, and a timed Speed mode — each one the same math-Wordle idea at a different scale. The variants guide covers how each one changes the board.

Once you’ve run through those, the genre gets bigger: Mathler, Numberle, and a shelf of other daily math games each put their own spin on the same guess-and-feedback loop. Our games like Nerdle guide reviews them one by one, with honest notes on what’s actually different and links to the real sites.

Frequently Asked Questions#

Is there a Wordle with numbers?

Yes — Nerdle. It runs Wordle’s exact six-guess, color-feedback format over a hidden math equation instead of a hidden word, so the loop feels familiar immediately even though every guess has to compute.

What is the math version of Wordle called?

Nerdle is a well-known math version of the format: you guess an equation instead of a word. Mathler and Numberle use related ideas with different rules.

Is math Wordle the same as Nerdle?

Nerdle is one math Wordle. The phrase also describes other number and equation games, so check each game's rules before using a Nerdle strategy or solver.

Do you need to be good at math to play?

No further than school-level arithmetic: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and order of operations. There’s no algebra involved — the actual skill being tested is deduction under a six-guess limit, the same muscle Wordle players already use.
