Heardle

The music-intro guessing game that grew too fast, got bought by Spotify, and was gone fifteen months later. Here's the whole story — and what fills the silence now.

Last updated

The Rise#

Heardle played you the opening second of a song. Wrong guess or skip, and the snippet grew — one second toward sixteen — across six tries. It launched on February 26, 2022 from London digital studio Omakase, whose founder told Product Hunt a bad pun had inspired the whole thing, and by March it was everywhere Wordle had been two months earlier.

The Spotify Era#

Spotify acquired Heardle in July 2022 for an undisclosed sum, pitching it as a music-discovery tool with plans for localization. The integration never really came: the game stayed a standalone page, and in April 2023 Spotify announced it would shut down. Heardle went dark on May 5, 2023 — less than ten months under its new owner — with Spotify saying it would focus on other discovery features.

What to Play Instead#

No official revival exists as of July 2026, but the format is doing fine without its founder. Bandle rebuilds the song one instrument at a time, drums first — arguably a better puzzle than the raw intro ever was. Spotle guesses the artist rather than the track, with debut-year and popularity feedback. And a constellation of fan-built Heardles — general-purpose revivals and artist-specific spinoffs — carries the original mechanic, with availability that comes and goes.

Frequently Asked Questions#

Why did Spotify shut down Heardle?

Spotify said it was refocusing on other music-discovery features; coverage at the time placed the decision within its broader 2023 cost-cutting. No specific usage numbers were ever published.

Is there an official Heardle replacement?

No. As of July 2026 nothing official has returned. Bandle and Spotle are the strongest active music dailies, and fan-built revivals keep the original intro-guessing format alive unofficially.
