Nerdle vs Wordle

The feedback logic is identical. Green means right character, right spot; purple is Wordle’s yellow (in the equation, wrong position); black is grey. If you can read a Wordle board, you can read a Nerdle board — including the tricky repeated-character rules, which work the same way.

Opening with information, not answers. Wordle players learn to open with letter-rich probes like CRANE or SLATE. The same thinking wins Nerdle: our generated-strategy comparison using all 17,723 modelled answer forms as openers ranks 52-34=18 on top — eight distinct characters built from common digits and symbols, the Nerdle equivalent of a vowel-heavy starter (the full ranking).

Frequency thinking. Just as E and A dominate English words, digits aren’t uniform in Nerdle — 1 appears in 60.8% of answers while 0 shows up in only 25.2%. Swap letter frequencies for digit frequencies and your intuition carries straight over.

Every guess must compute. Wordle asks for a real word; Nerdle asks for a true equation. That constraint is brutal and beautiful: knowing three characters often pins down the rest by arithmetic alone. A Wordle player deduces; a Nerdle player can sometimes solve.

Structure leaks information. The equals sign sits in position 6 in 59.3% of answers, numbers never carry leading zeros, and an 8-character frame only fits certain shapes. Wordle has no equivalent of “I know where the = is, so the right side is a 2-digit number.” (Our strategy guide maps all of these hidden rules.)

The pools are built differently. Wordle draws targets from a curated word list. NerdleBuddy instead models all 17,723 written forms generated under documented Classic equation constraints. That is our model, not Nerdle’s official schedule; commutative twins like 12+35=47 and 35+12=47 both count as wins.

In NerdleBuddy’s saved strategy under real Nerdle rules, the model remains tractable despite the bigger pool: the decision tree finishes every one of the 17,723 modelled answer forms in at most 5 guesses, averaging 3.0 — and 77.6% of answers fall in exactly 3. Those figures are not a clean head-to-head with Wordle: published analyses use different answer lists, accepted guesses, and strategy assumptions, while human play runs higher in both games.

The reason is the maths constraint: valid equations are so structured that each feedback pattern eliminates enormous swaths of the pool. For humans, though, Nerdle usually feels harder at first — arithmetic under pressure is a different muscle than vocabulary.
