Every verified Classic day our percentile difficulty model rates 5/5 — the hardest 20% of modelled answer forms. Each date links its spoiler-gated answer page.

Ranked by our percentile difficulty model over verified answers in the NerdleBuddy pool: 5/5 is the hardest 20% of modelled answer forms, 1/5 the gentlest 20%.

What Makes an Answer Hard

Repeated characters are a clue here, but not a signature of hard equations. Across all modelled forms, 81% already contain at least one repeat and the average uses 6.82 distinct characters. The five-guess cases run slightly more repetitive, averaging 6.33 distinct characters, but a handful of cases cannot establish that repetition causes the worst outcomes. A repeated tile can reveal less new information than a new character; how many look-alike candidates remain is what matters on these paths.

Hard answers also live in crowded neighbourhoods. 14-7-1=6 sits among subtraction near-twins — 14-1-6=7 and 14-6-7=1 both appear on its own strategy path — and because subtraction does not commute, each one is a fully distinct answer even under real Nerdle rules. A sum such as 2+8+9=19 is won the moment any reordering of its terms is played, but these subtraction twins must each be played out, so each guess eliminates only a handful of look-alikes. The second-guess guide shows how the strategy splits crowded fields like this early, before they become endgames.
