What Is Quadle? (Probably Not What You Think)

Search for Quadle and the internet will quietly hand you Quordle results — usually correctly. But a real Daily Quadle exists too, and it isn't a Wordle variant at all. Consider this the untangling.

What Quadle Is#

Most of the time, "Quadle" is a slip of the fingers for Quordle — the game that runs four Wordle boards simultaneously off your single stream of guesses, created by Freddie Meyer in early 2022 and acquired by Merriam-Webster in 2023. If four grids and nine guesses is what you remember, Quordle is your game.

The most visible game actually named Quadle is Daily Quadle, hosted on Shockwave and made by Article19 Group: a Connections-style puzzle where sixteen words hide four secret categories, and you submit groups of four against a mistake limit and a timer. A separate Android app (Quadle: Grid & Guess) plays a similar grouping game, and an unrelated older PC platformer also wore the name. None of them is a maths game — the Nerdle-adjacent name is a coincidence of the '-le' era.

Play it at shockwave.com. Quadle is its own game by its own makers — NerdleBuddy is not affiliated with it (or with Nerdle); this guide is our independent take.

How to Play Quadle#

Daily Quadle: read the sixteen words, find four that share a category, submit. Four mistakes are allowed (each costs time on the clock), and hints will solve a category for a stiffer time penalty. It's fast, sociable, and much more about lateral association than deduction.

Quordle, since it's probably why you're here: nine guesses, four hidden five-letter words, every guess applied to all four boards at once. It's Wordle with a resource-allocation problem stapled on — the strategic depth comes from choosing guesses that serve multiple boards.

Quadle vs Nerdle#

What the two share

  • Daily puzzles with a limited-mistake structure
  • The '-le' naming DNA and share-your-result culture
  • Quordle's multi-board resource management echoes Nerdle's information-per-guess thinking

What changes

  • Words and categories, zero arithmetic
  • Daily Quadle is association and sorting, not feedback-driven deduction
  • The name refers to at least three unrelated games — Nerdle is exactly one thing

If you arrived here from a mistyped Quordle, no judgment — go enjoy it, it's excellent. If Daily Quadle's word-grouping appeals, it makes a good change of pace from deduction games. And if what you actually wanted was four-boards-of-Nerdle energy — juggling constraints, spending guesses where they buy the most information — that's precisely the muscle the Nerdle solver makes visible, one optimally-chosen guess at a time.

Our rating:

Sharpen up before you switch. The deduction habits transfer: open with an information-rich guess, read the feedback, eliminate hard. Practise the loop on today’s NerdleBuddy puzzle or let the Nerdle solver suggest a next guess from your current feedback.

Frequently Asked Questions#

Is Quadle the same as Quordle?

No. Quordle is the four-board Wordle now run by Merriam-Webster; most 'Quadle' searches are typos for it. The games actually named Quadle — chiefly Shockwave's Daily Quadle — are word-grouping puzzles in the Connections mold.

How do you play Daily Quadle?

Sort a 4x4 grid of sixteen words into four hidden categories by submitting groups of four. You're allowed four mistakes, the round is timed, and hints are available at a time cost. It's free in the browser on Shockwave.

Is Quadle a maths game?

No — despite the Nerdle-adjacent name, every current Quadle is a word or category game. If the name led you here hunting for maths, the hidden-equation family (Nerdle, Mathler, Numberle) is the shelf you want.

Who makes Daily Quadle?

Article19 Group, distributed on Shockwave and syndicated to other portals. Its launch date isn't clearly documented, so we won't guess — it rose to visibility well after the 2022 Wordle wave.
