Quordle

Four five-letter words, nine guesses, every guess typed into all four boards at once. Quordle is the multi-board Wordle that earned itself a dictionary.

What Quordle Is#

Quordle shows you four Wordle boards side by side. Every word you type is scored on all four at once, so a guess that is brilliant for one board can be junk for the other three. You get nine guesses to clear all four — which feels generous right up until two boards want different letters in the same slot.

Freddie Meyer built it in late January 2022 after reading about Dordle, the two-board variant, and wondering how much further the idea could stretch. Within weeks of a February 2022 Guardian write-up it had reportedly reached a million players.

How to Play#

Feedback works exactly like Wordle — green for right letter in the right spot, yellow for right letter in the wrong spot — repeated on each board. The skill is sequencing: open with two information-rich guesses that serve all four boards, then close boards out one at a time instead of chasing greens everywhere at once.

Beside the daily Classic there's Chill (more forgiving), Extreme (tighter), Sequence (boards unlock one at a time), and an unlimited practice mode.

The Merriam-Webster Era#

Merriam-Webster acquired Quordle in January 2023 — almost exactly a year after The New York Times bought Wordle, the dictionary answering the newspaper — and said publicly it had no plans to paywall it. The game still plays free in a browser; an optional free account keeps streaks and stats.

Frequently Asked Questions#

Is Quordle free to play?

Yes. It plays free on Merriam-Webster's site with no download, and Merriam-Webster said at acquisition it had no plans to put it behind a paywall. An optional free account saves streaks and stats.

How many guesses do you get in Quordle?

Nine in the daily Classic mode, shared across all four boards. Chill mode is more forgiving, Extreme is tighter, and Sequence makes you solve the boards in order.

Who made Quordle?

Freddie Meyer, in late January 2022, inspired by Wordle and the two-board Dordle. Merriam-Webster has published it since January 2023.
