What Hello Wordl Is#
Hello Wordl keeps Wordle's core loop — guess a hidden word, get green, yellow, and grey feedback — but removes the daily limit entirely. Rounds are endless, and a slider lets you set the target word's length anywhere from four to eleven letters. Whatever the length, you get six guesses.
It was made by Lynn, a programmer who posts as @chordbug and announced the game in the first days of January 2022 as a less social but infinitely replayable Wordle clone for fellow addicts. She likens the format to the TV game show Lingo, which had players guessing letter-graded words decades before Wordle. The game runs free in the browser at hellowordl.net.
How to Play#
Choose a length, then guess valid words of that length: green means right letter, right spot; yellow means the letter is in the word somewhere else; grey means it is absent. Longer settings sound scarier but each guess also carries more letters of information. Two optional toggles sharpen the game: Hard mode forces you to keep using every hint you have revealed, and Ultra Hard goes further — every guess must be fully consistent with all previous clues, greys included, so throwaway probing words are off the table.
An Open-Source Wordle#
Hello Wordl is MIT-licensed and public on GitHub (lynn/hello-wordl), which has made it quiet infrastructure for the wider clone ecosystem — it has been forked widely as the starting point for other variants. Its word lists are deliberately curated: targets come from a hand-trimmed slice of roughly the 25,000 most common entries in Peter Norvig's English word-frequency data, with plurals, obscurities, and British spellings removed, while guesses are validated against North American Scrabble tournament word lists. The result is a game that stays fair at eleven letters.
