What Waffle Is#
Waffle hands you a solved crossword that somebody shook: six five-letter words in a waffle-shaped lattice, letters scrambled in place. You drag letters to swap them, Wordle's green-and-yellow colouring shows what's already right, and you have 15 swaps to fix everything.
James Robinson invented it in his kitchen in Portsmouth, England, in early 2022; within a year local press reported it had been played by more than 13 million people, and it has since become a physical book as well.
How to Play#
Every puzzle is solvable in exactly 10 swaps, and each swap you save earns a star — five stars means zero waste. The trick is the intersections: a yellow letter sitting where two words cross belongs to one of them, and working out which before you touch anything is the whole game. Count your swaps on paper if you're chasing five stars; the board punishes improvisation.
Beyond the Daily#
A bigger Deluxe waffle runs weekly for players who want the same logic at a crueler scale, and the boxed book version translates the format to paper. Few Wordle-era games have traveled off the screen; Waffle did.

Frequently Asked Questions#
How many swaps do you get in Waffle?
Fifteen. Every daily board is solvable in 10, and each unused swap earns a star — solve in exactly 10 and you get all five.
Is every Waffle puzzle really solvable?
Yes — boards are generated so a 10-swap perfect solution always exists. Running out of swaps is a planning failure, which is exactly what makes five stars satisfying.
