What Lewdle Is#
Lewdle is a daily word game about rude words — its own warning screen says as much before you play. The format mirrors Wordle: guess the hidden word in six tries, with green, yellow, and grey tiles reporting your progress. The twist is the lexicon. Answers come from Lewdle's own dictionary of profane and lewd slang, and by default your guesses must come from that same rude-word list — a perfectly ordinary five-letter word is simply rejected. Answers are usually five letters, though the rotation has reportedly included longer words.
Lewdle launched in January 2022, built by screenwriter Gary Whitta (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) with game developer Adam Nickerson, as reported by Business Insider. While Nickerson built the technical backend, Whitta and his wife compiled the word list, drawing on rude vocabulary from several English dialects, including the British slang of Whitta's upbringing. It spread fast: within less than a week of launch it reportedly had around 880,000 daily players.
How to Play#
Play like Wordle, but think in Lewdle's register: the effective dictionary is far smaller than standard English, so each guess eliminates a larger share of the possibilities, and letter patterns repeat across the genre. Experienced players develop go-to openers from within the rude lexicon itself. If you cannot summon enough vulgarity on demand, a reported 'sheltered mode' allows guesses from the standard dictionary in exchange for a scoring penalty. A mobile app edition also exists, per its App Store listing.
The Dictionary Is the Game#
Lewdle's core joke is that its guess validation enforces the theme: the game does not merely permit rude words, it requires them, which turns every rejected guess into a small test of your gutter vocabulary. Meanwhile the coloured-square share grid keeps the actual profanity out of your social feed, letting players brag without shocking anyone. It is a novelty game with real staying power, built on the insight that the word list — not the mechanic — is where a Wordle variant's personality lives.
