Metazooa

Each guess must be a real species. Instead of a simple right/wrong or colour grid, Metazooa reports the most specific taxonomic rank the guess shares with the mystery animal — kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, or genus — effectively showing where the two organisms' branches diverge on the evolutionary tree. Guessing an animal in the same genus as the answer signals you're extremely close; sharing only a kingdom means you're still far off.

A common strategy is guessing taxonomically distant animals early — say, an insect, then a fish, then a bird — to establish which broad branch (vertebrate versus invertebrate, mammal versus reptile, and so on) the answer sits in, then narrowing within that branch using the remaining guesses.

Because every clue is phrased in terms of shared ancestry rather than a shared trait, players tend to pick up real taxonomic vocabulary — the difference between order and family, or why two animals that look alike can still sit in different classes — simply by playing repeatedly, which has made Metazooa a recurring recommendation in science-education and homeschooling circles alongside its life as a casual daily puzzle.
