What Redactle Is#
Redactle presents a genuine Wikipedia article with almost every word hidden behind black blocks; only punctuation and the most common English words remain visible. You type words one at a time, and every correct guess reveals each spot where that word appears in the text. The page's shape slowly emerges — section headings, dates, repeated names — until you can identify the subject. Answers are drawn from Wikipedia's roughly 10,000 'vital articles,' so the target is always a substantial topic such as a country, a scientific concept, or a historical figure rather than obscure trivia.
The original Redactle was created by developer John Turner and launched in April 2022, drawing coverage from outlets including PC Gamer and Kotaku. Turner's site later went offline; as of mid-2026 the game continues at redactle.net, a successor version that its own about page says is maintained by developer Ben Brady.
How to Play#
There is no guess cap. Open with high-frequency structural words — 'history,' 'century,' 'world,' 'system,' 'known' — to sketch out sentences, then chase specifics: years, place names, and technical terms suggested by the layout. An infobox full of numbers hints at a country or a person; long uniform paragraphs suggest a concept. You solve the puzzle by guessing the words of the article's title, and your result records how many guesses you used and how many of them actually appeared in the text. Solves commonly range from a few dozen guesses to several hundred, which is part of the game's reputation for difficulty.
After the Original Went Dark#
Redactle's trajectory mirrors that of many one-developer daily games. Turner ran the original as a side project, supported by a Patreon, before the site went quiet; the community carried on at redactle.net, which keeps the daily rhythm and adds an archive of past puzzles, an unlimited mode, stats tracking, and, according to the site, multiplayer options and multiple languages. Because Redactle clones are widespread, the .net address is the one generally treated as the continuation of the original game.
