Sweardle

Four letters, four guesses, and a word you would not say in front of your grandmother. Sweardle is the cheeky Wordle parody where the daily answer is always a swear.

What Sweardle Is#

Sweardle is a daily guessing game with one four-letter rude word as the answer and four guesses to find it. The feedback is pure Wordle: green for a correct letter in the correct spot, yellow for a correct letter in the wrong spot, grey for a letter not in the word. The joke is the vocabulary, but the game underneath plays it straight, with real deduction and a fresh word each day.

Sweardle emerged during the January 2022 wave of Wordle spinoffs and was created by Stuart Houghton as a parody and tribute to the original, as covered by NPR. Its dictionary is deliberately small — reportedly around 50 words — and deliberately curated: the list avoids overtly racist, homophobic, or misogynistic terms, keeping the profanity cheerfully general-purpose. Houghton has also added words by popular demand, including the Scottish 'pish' after requests from Scottish players.

How to Play#

You get four guesses, matching the four-letter format. That sounds stingy next to Wordle's six, but the pool of four-letter vulgarities in common English is small enough that one or two well-chosen probes usually corner the answer. Open with a guess that tests a vowel and a couple of common consonants, watch which letters survive, and think in categories — anatomy, bodily functions, exclamations — rather than brute-forcing the alphabet. Most rounds take under a minute.

A Joke That Plays Fair#

Sweardle works because it commits to both halves of its premise. As comedy, it is a one-tap punchline you can send to a group chat; as a puzzle, the tiny curated dictionary makes four guesses genuinely fair rather than punishing. The curation matters, too: by keeping slurs out of the list, the game stays naughty rather than nasty — which is why mainstream outlets could cover it with a smile.

Frequently Asked Questions#

How many guesses does Sweardle give you?

Four guesses for a four-letter word — a smaller budget than Wordle's six, balanced by a much smaller pool of possible answers.

Does Sweardle include slurs?

Reportedly no. Creator Stuart Houghton has said the word list avoids overtly racist, homophobic, or misogynistic terms, and words are added selectively, sometimes at players' request.
