What Tradle Is#
Tradle shows you a treemap — a mosaic of rectangles sized by dollar value — representing what a mystery country exports, from crude petroleum to integrated circuits to coffee. You have six guesses to name the country. After each wrong guess the game reports how far your answer is from the target in kilometers, an arrow pointing toward it, and a proximity percentage — the same feedback loop Worldle popularized. The game lives on the OEC's games hub at games.oec.world.
Tradle launched in March 2022 and comes from the team behind the Observatory of Economic Complexity (OEC), the trade-data platform co-founded by Alexander Simoes and developed by Datawheel. The export breakdowns are real OEC visualizations, so every puzzle doubles as a snapshot of an actual national economy.
How to Play#
Read the biggest rectangles first. A treemap dominated by a single commodity narrows things quickly — copper suggests Chile, Peru, or Zambia; cocoa points toward West Africa — while a diverse mix of machinery, electronics, and vehicles signals a large industrial economy. Make a first guess consistent with the export profile, then triangulate: the distance and direction feedback turns economic reasoning into geographic elimination. Six guesses is usually enough to bracket a region with your first two answers and walk the arrows the rest of the way. When the map stumps you entirely, guessing a country at the center of the plausible continent maximizes what the arrow tells you.
The Data Behind the Game#
Tradle's puzzles are generated from the OEC's harmonized international trade datasets, the same data the platform serves to researchers and analysts. That grounding has made it a minor classroom phenomenon: economics instructors have used Tradle as a warm-up activity for connecting trade models to real-world data. The OEC has since built a small stable of daily games on its data, with Tradle as the entry point alongside companions such as Pick 5 on the same hub. Playing daily quietly builds a working sense of who exports what — which is precisely the point.

Frequently Asked Questions#
Is Tradle free to play?

Who makes Tradle?
The Observatory of Economic Complexity, a trade-data platform co-founded by Alexander Simoes and developed by Datawheel. It launched the game in March 2022.
What clues do you get after a wrong guess?
Three: the distance in kilometers from your guess to the answer, an arrow showing the direction, and a proximity percentage that approaches 100% as you close in.
