What Dordle Is#
Dordle puts two hidden five-letter words on screen side by side. Every guess you type is entered into both boards simultaneously, and each board grades it independently — a word that lights up green on the left can come back entirely grey on the right. You get seven guesses to clear both boards, and the round ends when you solve them both or run out.
Dordle is the work of Guilherme Töws, a Brazilian-born indie developer who publishes as Zaratustra Productions and is also known for the platformer Eversion. He released it as a free browser game on itch.io in early 2022, in the weeks after Wordle went viral, and it is widely credited as the first of the multi-board Wordle variants — Quordle's makers have cited it as their direct inspiration.
How to Play#
Type any valid five-letter word and submit. On each board, green marks a letter in the right spot, yellow marks a letter that is in that board's word but placed elsewhere, and grey means the letter is absent — from that board's word only, so read the two sets of clues separately. Seven guesses is a tight budget for two words: open with one or two coverage words that test common letters, then finish whichever board is closest to pinned down instead of splitting attention. Dordle comes in two flavors: Daily Dordle, one shared word pair per day, and Free Dordle, an unlimited mode with random pairs.
The Spinoff That Scaled#
Dordle's doubling idea escalated fast. Quordle raised it to four words in nine guesses, Octordle to eight in thirteen, Sedecordle to sixteen in twenty-one, and Duotrigordle to thirty-two in thirty-seven — all following the same words-plus-five arithmetic that Dordle's own budget fits (two plus five). The original remains free on Töws' itch.io page, and as of mid-2026 third-party hint sites still track a new daily pair. One caution: many lookalike Dordle domains are unaffiliated clones, and some credit fabricated creators. The page at zaratustra.itch.io/dordle is the source.
