What Semantle Is#
Semantle hides one word and lets you guess as many times as you need. Each guess returns a similarity score: 100 means you found it, while unrelated words land near zero or below. The scores come from word2vec, a machine-learning model of word meaning, so 'similar' means how words are actually used together — not how they look or what a thesaurus says.
David Turner built it in January 2022 and has said the first friend he showed it to didn't find it playable. It went viral anyway, because the pain is the point: games routinely run dozens of guesses, and the model's idea of 'close' will gaslight you at least once per puzzle.
How to Play#
Open with broad category words — person, place, feeling, object — until something scores warm, then ride the gradient: the 'getting close' indicator tells you when you've entered the answer's neighborhood. Related-topic words usually beat synonyms.
Semantle Junior runs an easier word list, the archive keeps every past puzzle playable, and a multiplayer mode lets a group attack the same word from a shared room code.
The Semantle Effect#
Semantle proved a Wordle-like needs no board at all — just a daily ritual and feedback that turns each miss into information. Its meaning-gradient idea spawned a family of its own, most famously Contexto, which repackaged the concept behind a friendlier rank number.

Frequently Asked Questions#
Why is Semantle so hard?
Because the model measures how words are used, not dictionary similarity — the answer's semantic neighborhood can be unintuitive, and with no spelling feedback there's nothing to anchor on. Dozens of guesses per game is normal.
Is there an easier version of Semantle?
Semantle Junior uses a friendlier word list. Contexto — a separate game built on the same idea — presents the feedback as a single rank, which most players find gentler to reason about.
