Contexto

Guess the secret word by meaning. Every guess gets a rank, #1 is the answer, and the climb down from #4,000 is the whole game.

What Contexto Is#

Contexto hides a word and ranks every guess you make against it: if 'ocean' comes back #832, the model considers 831 words closer. Guesses are unlimited and there's no spelling feedback at all — just the rank, which turns out to be exactly the right amount of information to be addictive.

It's the work of Nildo Junior, a Brazilian software engineer living in Norway, who found Semantle in early 2022, loved the idea, and rebuilt it with a cleaner interface and the single rank number. Brazil made it a phenomenon first; the English version took off later in 2022, and it has been his full-time project since.

How to Play#

Probe with broad nouns until something ranks inside the top thousand, then chase the topic rather than the word: guesses that rank close together usually share a subject, not letters. The daily plays free on the web, recent puzzles stay available, and there's an official mobile app.

Contexto vs Semantle#

The two share one core trick — word embeddings measuring meaning-distance — but Contexto's single rank reads instantly, where Semantle's raw similarity scores take calibrating. If Semantle is the enthusiast's version, Contexto is the one you can hand to anyone at the table.
