What Squareword Is#
Squareword is a daily puzzle built on a 5×5 letter grid where each of the five rows and each of the five columns spells a real five-letter word — ten interlocking answers sharing twenty-five letters. You solve it by typing ordinary five-letter guesses. Each guess is compared against every row of the hidden square: letters that match a row in the correct column lock into the grid in green, letters that belong to a row's word but are not yet placed appear as yellow hints alongside that row, and letters that appear nowhere in the square are marked grey.
The game runs at squareword.org with one shared daily puzzle plus a random mode for extra rounds. The site does not prominently credit a creator, so its origin story is best left unstated. What matters structurally is the interlock: every letter you pin down serves two answers at once, an across word and a down word.
How to Play#
There is no hard guess limit; instead, the number of guesses you take is your score, and lower is better. The shareable result grades a solve in brackets — under six guesses, under eleven, under sixteen, and sixteen or more. Open with letter-rich words to seed greens across several rows at once, then switch from thinking in rows to thinking in columns: every locked green also constrains a down word, and the intersections are where deductions multiply. Late in a solve, the fastest route is usually reading a nearly complete column, inferring its word, and letting that inference fill holes in two or three rows at the same time.
Scoring, Stats, and the Daily Habit#
Because guesses are unlimited but counted, Squareword's difficulty lives in the scoreboard rather than in failure: you will almost always finish, and the question is whether you finish efficiently. A built-in stats screen tracks your score history and running average, and players posting results publicly often treat a single-digit solve as a good day. The one-a-day format plus the random practice mode gives the game both a shared ritual and a training room.
