What TimeGuessr Is#

TimeGuessr, at timeguessr.com, deals you five photographs per daily game — news moments, street scenes, everyday snapshots from decades past. For each one you drop a pin on a world map and set a year, and the game scores both dimensions: up to 5,000 points for location and up to 5,000 for the year, so a perfect round is worth 10,000 and a perfect game 50,000. Points fall away the farther your pin and your year land from the truth, which makes near-misses valuable rather than worthless.

The game is the creation of Gus Owen, a developer based in Leeds, England, and operates through a UK company, TimeGuessr Limited. Game databases date its launch to 2023, and it has since expanded from the browser to iOS and Android apps.

How to Play#

Work each photo like a detective. Cars, clothing, signage language, and image quality date a picture: black-and-white film suggests the pre-1960s, muted colour stock the 1970s, crisp digital the 2000s onward. Architecture, terrain, and street furniture place it. Commit to a decade before fine-tuning the year — the scoring curve rewards proximity, not just perfection — and zoom in before dropping your pin, since location points also scale with distance. After five rounds you get a shareable final score, and because the daily set is the same for everyone, group-chat rivalries do the rest.

Beyond the Daily Game#

TimeGuessr is free to play on the web, reportedly ad-supported with a paid option to remove ads, and the mobile apps package the same loop for phones. Despite the name, it is not a GeoGuessr product: it is an independent game that borrows the pin-on-a-map scoring idea and adds a time axis. That second axis is the design twist that makes it distinctive — a player with sharp historical instincts can outscore a geography expert, because a badly missed decade costs as much as a wrong continent.
