What Xordle Is#

Xordle is a daily word game that hides two five-letter answers on a single board, with one governing rule: the two words never share a letter. Every guess you type is scored against both answers at once. A green tile means that letter sits in that exact position in one of the two words; a yellow tile means the letter appears somewhere in one of them; a grey tile means it appears in neither. The board never tells you which word a clue belongs to — sorting green and yellow evidence between two invisible owners is the entire puzzle, and it plays very differently from two-board games like Dordle.

In an interview on the Hey Good Game blog, Xordle's developer describes the name as a pun on XOR, the 'exclusive or' of programming logic: because the answers share no letters, any letter clue is true of exactly one word, never both. The game reportedly began as a modification of an open-source Wordle clone, and the same developer is credited with Fibble, a lying-feedback variant. The developer has also said Xordle carries no ads or monetization.

How to Play#

You get eight guesses to find both words, and the daily puzzle begins with a free clue row that is identical for every player, so nobody starts from a blank slate. Type any valid five-letter word and the merged feedback appears on that row. Gray tiles are the most efficient clue in the game, since one grey eliminates a letter from both answers simultaneously. The core skill is attribution: when a row shows a green and two yellows, they may belong to different words, so test letters in combinations that force a contradiction. Once you are confident of one full answer, its five letters become automatic greys for the other, which usually collapses the endgame quickly.

Why the No-Overlap Rule Matters#

The no-shared-letters constraint is not flavor text; it is what keeps a one-board double puzzle fair. A single tile can only ever belong to one answer, so a green for one word can never secretly conflict with a yellow for the other, and every clue stays unambiguous even when its owner is unknown. The rule also gives Xordle its distinctive endgame logic: solving either word instantly purges five letters from the other's alphabet. An unlimited mode with randomly generated puzzles is available for practice beyond the daily.

Frequently Asked Questions#

How many guesses do you get in Xordle?

Eight guesses in the daily puzzle, which also starts with a free clue row that is the same for all players. Both five-letter words must be found within those eight rows.

Can the two Xordle words share a letter?

No. The two secret words never have a letter in common, so every letter you confirm in one word is automatically absent from the other.
