Absurdle

Absurdle never picks a word. It keeps every answer it can still legally claim and yields the least helpful feedback allowed — until your logic pins it down.

What Absurdle Is#

Play Absurdle and the game plays you back. Instead of committing to a secret word, it maintains the whole pool of candidates and, after each guess, picks whichever feedback pattern keeps the most words alive. A row of grey tiles isn't bad luck; it's policy.

It's by Sam Hughes — the British programmer and science-fiction author better known as qntm — who released it on January 9, 2022. The design philosophy comes straight from his earlier creation HATETRIS, the Tetris that always deals the worst possible piece.

How to Play#

Guesses are unlimited, and a perfect game reportedly finishes in four. The strategy inverts Wordle's: early guesses exist to shrink the space the adversary can hide in, not to fish for greens. Watch the feedback pattern — every tile it concedes is a corner it could no longer avoid.

Challenge mode flips the fight: you're handed a target word and must maneuver Absurdle into having no answer left but that one. Deliberately guessing letters the target doesn't contain is, counterintuitively, a winning move.

Why It Matters#

Absurdle is the purest hard mode in the whole family: identical tiles and rules, completely different fight. It also made a point that shaped later variants — the daily-puzzle format works even when the puzzle is actively hostile.

Frequently Asked Questions#

Does Absurdle actually have an answer?

Not until you force one. It keeps every word consistent with the feedback it has shown and only 'commits' when your guesses leave exactly one candidate.

What's the fewest guesses Absurdle can be beaten in?

Reportedly four, with perfect play. Unlimited guesses are allowed, so the score to chase is how few you need.
